Lava Zones in Hawaii

There are nine (9) lava zones on Hawai’i Island (Big Island) and four (4) on Maui. The higher zones have less risk associated with them, but often a higher price for homes and land.

While lava zone one and two can have lower priced homes and land, they can also have a higher cost of insurance–sometimes double. More on insurance at the bottom.

Did you know most of Hawai’i Island is from lava that flowed over 500,000 years ago?!? With that said, most of the southern half is less than 5,000 years old–some is VERY recent, as Kīlauea and Mauna Loa are two of the world’s most active volcanoes.

RECENT ERUPTION…see our short video of Kīlauea erupting!

Keep in mind, USGS states Haleakalā erupts far less frequently than either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea, so zone 1 on Maui has a lower risk than zone 1 on Big Island.

INSURANCE…in lava zone 1 and 2 is much higher and has a limit of assessed value that can be covered by HPIA, currently $450,000. Supplemental insurance may be needed to cover the difference, which can have a higher cost as well. For more information about insurance, visit HPIAinfo.com. They have links to possible carriers at the bottom of their home page, just select an island. If you’re looking for insurance on rental/vacation homes visit https://nreig.com.
